Sustainability and the Built Environment

A great example of consumption awareness

If you haven’t yet noticed a large (HUGE) aspect of sustainability is consumption awareness, which is a topic we will discuss frequently.  I thought this interview with Ryan Gosling and Jimmy Kimmel is a great example of consumption awareness underneath the sustainability umbrella.  He quickly explains that he is involved in an organization that is trying to have the metals that are mined in the Congo used for everyday electronics (phones, laptops, etc…) that they come from “conflict free zones.” In other words, areas where conflict (fighting for ownership of the commodity) is protected so that the conflict doesn’t harm innocent people (which often happens in the form of death, mutataltion and rape).

He discusses it quickly and explains people can just write in and let companies purchasing product through non-conflict free zones to consider only buying minerals from conflict free zones.  The organization he represents is Raise Hope for Congo.

FYI, I tend to be aware of issues that involve the rights of women and in regions such as the Congo there is often rape that is used as a “war tactic”.  Also, I tend to respect people, Gosling in this case, when they are calm and quiet about bringing awareness. I didn’t feel in the interview that we he was preaching to me, and I listen better when no preaching is involved.  And yes, I did send the email from the website to the 21 electronic companies involved.
