USGBC Athens Branch Coming Soon!

Hi 4900/6900,

EGB sent the following email today and I thought it was full of great info. Especially that USGBC is opening an Athens Branch, but also, on March 22 is a USGBC Green Scene at Hotel Indigo that I recommend everyone attend.  Heck, I may even give extra credit points if you go…..As you have probably already learned in life – networking is one of the best ways (if not the best way) to get job opportunities.

Below from Lili Agel (EGB)

Hello everyone!

It’s been a while, but we’re into bigger and bigger things.

  • First, EGB is restructuring!  USGBC is founding a new Athens branch.  This is good for EGB, even though we’ll probably have fewer professional members.  EGB will still draw members from the University and operate largely on the University schedule.  With the USGBC Athens branch, EGB will be closely aligned with a year-round, in-town professional group, making both networking and learning easier and ongoing. Let us know if you’re keenly interested in joining USGBC Athens.  We’ll be happy to connect you.
  • We’re changing our name! The National USGBC has been slowly renaming its Emerging Green Builder clubs as Emerging Professionals.  We’ve asked to at least informally keep the ‘Green’ to distinguish from the other groups of professionals on campus. National kindly agreed.  We are now called Emerging Green Professionals, EGP in short.

Upcoming EGP events:

  • Boulevard Woods workdays—  Boulevard Woods aspires to be a volunteer-built neighborhood park in the Boulevard Neighborhood.  Before the plants leaf out this spring, the neighborhood association would like to host a couple of work days to clean/clear the site.  They need our help!
Pitch in this Saturday, Feb. 26 from 9 am to 12noon, or 1pm to 4pm
or next week, Saturday, March 5 from 9 am to 12noon, or 1pm to 4pm
Help out as much as you like!

Coffee, water and snacks will be provided, but if you can, please bring:
•    Loppers
•    Mattocks
•    Tarps
•    Pruning saws
•    Hatchets
•    Wheelbarrows
•    Buckets for carrying trash (mainly cans, bottles and paper bags)
RSVP to me as soon as you can.
  • In April, we’ll be touring Down to Earth Energy— a biodiesel research lab & manufacturer in Monroe.  It should be neat! I’ll send more details out as I know them.

Upcoming USGBC events:

  • Green Scene— the USGBC social event is coming to Athens!  The first Green Scene will be on Tuesday, March 22 from 6-8 at Hotel Indigo.  Join the new USGBC chapter for networking and drink specials.
  • Lunch & Learn—  Professor Tom Lawrence will be presenting Monday, March 28 from 12noon to 1:30 in Driftmier Engineering Center.  Details to come, but the lecture has already been approved for LEED AP continuing ed credits.

Both EGP and USGBC Athens are hard at work organizing and planning other events.  We’ll send out details as soon as we make them, promise!
