Sustainable UGA Weekly Update

To promote sustainability-related events on the UGA campus

and in the Athens community

Events and Opportunities This Week


1.     First Friday EATS: Social Sustainability

When: Friday, Nov. 4, 12 – 1 p.m.

Where: Joe Frank Harris Commons first floor rotunda

What: Chris Cuomo (Department of

Philosophy) will discuss social aspects of sustainability, including her research on indigenous knowledge of climate change in Northern Alaska. This event is sponsored by the Office of Sustainability and the Academy of the Environment.



2.     Ecology Seminar: Monarch Butterflies

When: Tuesday, Nov. 1, 4 – 5 p.m.

Where: Ecology Auditorium

What: Jaap de Roode, assistant biology professor from Emory, will discuss, “Monarch Butterflies and their protozoan parasites.”



3.     Agricultural, Engineering and Natural Resources Career Fair

When: Wednesday, Nov. 2, 12 – 4 p.m.

Where: Tate Grand Hall

What: Recruiters from agriculture, engineering, forestry and other industries will offer information on job and internship opportunities.



4.     Operation Wallacea Research Opportunities Presentation

When: Thursday, Nov. 4, 4 p.m.

Where: Ecology Auditorium

What: Intertidal ecologist Dr. Ian Hendy will discuss the work of Operation Wallacea, an international conservation research organization, and how students can get involved.



5.     Workday for Hillel’s Go Green Initiative

When: Sunday, Nov. 6, 9:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Where: Hillel, 1155 S. Milledge Ave.

What: The people of Hillel at UGA are designing a green front yard and they need your help. Volunteers will be working on projects such as planting new shrubs, bushes and apple trees and installing planting beds and more.

Ongoing Events

1.     Tree Identification Classes

When: Mondays at 4 p.m. (through November)

Where: Oconee Forest Park at the boardwalk (near tennis courts)

What: Learn how to identify Georgia’s native trees in these free classes sponsored by the Warnell School.



2.    UGArden Workdays

When: Sundays 2 – 4 p.m. (No Thurs. work for the fall/winter)

Where: UGArden Community Garden, 2500 Milledge Ave., next to the UGA Horticulture greenhouses.


Other events:

Photographer, filmmaker and conservationist Mattias Klum will deliver the Boyd Lecture on Friday, Nov. 11 at 2:30 p.m. in the Mahler Auditorium of the Georgia Center. Klum’s photography has appeared in National Geographic, Audubon, Der Spiegel and the New York Times, and his films address several topics that are key to conservation today. Check out UGA Today articleon Klum for more information on his work and upcoming visit.

Parking Services is holding its annual Save Drive Event on Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Tate parking lot. University members can receive free car inspections from professional mechanics as well as free bike tune-ups and safety checks. Check out the Parking Services Website (scroll down to #12) for details.
