Events and Opportunities This Week

 

1.     Bra and T-Shirt Drive

When: Now through Wednesday, Nov. 30

Where: Drop off sites in Russell hall, Creswell hall, Myers hall, Brumby hall, Church hall and Boggs hall.

What: Athens-Clarke County Recycling is hosting a bra and T-shirt drive in celebration of America Recycles Day.  Gently used bras and T-shirts will be donated to Project Safe.

2.     Sustainability Film Series – “King Corn” and “Out to Pasture”

When: Tuesday, Nov. 8, 7 – 9 p.m.

Where: Rooker Hall – Cindy Rooker Fireside Lounge

What: University Housing will show a double feature as part of its monthly Sustainability Film Series.

3.     UGA Costa Rica Coffee Talk

When: Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2 – 3 p.m.

Where: Office of International Education’s library

What: UGA Costa Rica’s Assistant Director Matt Stevens and Coordinator Adam Rhinehart will discuss Costa Rican coffee and play the photo-documentary short, “The Call of the Quetzal.”

4.     Backcountry Cooking Class

When: Thursday, Nov. 10, 7 – 10 p.m.

Where: Ramsey Student Center

What: This GORP-sponsored program will teach participants about cooking styles, ingredients and equipment that are useful in backcountry cooking. Registration ends Nov. 9.

5.     Boyd Lecture – “The Big Picture: Communicating Conservation in a Complex World”

When: Friday, Nov. 11, 2:30 p.m.

Where: Georgia Center, Mahler Auditorium

What: Mattias Klum, photographer, filmmaker and conservationist whose work has appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times and other publications, will deliver the 2011 Boyd Lecture and UGA’s new Integrative Conservation Ph.D. program.

6.     16th Anniversary Party for ACC Recycling

When: Friday, Nov. 11, 7 – 9 p.m.

Where: ACC Recycling Facility, 699 Hancock Industrial Way

What: An outdoor, family-friendly event with music, a moonwalk, a reception and guided tours of the recently retrofitted facility. RSVP by calling (706) 613-3501.

7.     UGA Recycling Awareness Day

When: Monday, Nov. 14 10a.m. -2 p.m.

Where: Tate Center Plaza

What: The ACC-Recycling Division and Office of Sustainability staff and volunteers will be available to discuss the new recycling on campus and in the community. Giveaways will be available!

 

 

Ongoing Events

 

1.     Tree Identification Classes

When: Mondays at 4 p.m. (through November)

Where: Oconee Forest Park at the boardwalk (near tennis courts)

What: Learn how to identify Georgia’s native trees in these free classes sponsored by the Warnell School.

2.    UGArden Workdays

When: Sundays 2 – 4 p.m. (No Thursday work for the fall/winter)

Where: UGArden Community Garden, 2500 Milledge Ave., next to the UGA Horticulture greenhouses.
