Wk 7: Phase II Reflection

Response due at the beginning of class 10/01.

Studio DJ Design Development Working Drawing Presentation

Studio DJ Design Development Working Drawing Presentation

Congratulations on a successful project into the design development stage.  All the Studios are moving along very well in this project and I am please with your thoughtful and developed design solutions. There are two things I’d like to address to continue working on as a class:

A. ) Developing your verbal design language to effectively discuss your designs.  This takes time, but before you talk about your designs from now, you’ll need to prepare your presenations, practice your language to best describe your design.

B. ) Knowing your product and talking about product attributes, etc….Please expect me to become more inquisitive about your material/product selections and please be prepared to know that product as if you were the sales rep for the manufacture.

Please take some time and answer the following reflection based questions:

1)  Please discuss your experience of working with a project under budget.

2)  How have the in-class critiques helped or hindered your project advancement?

3)  What have you learned about receiving critiques of your work?

4)  What have you learned about critiquing your colleagues work?

5)  What strengths did you bring to your group for the design development stage?

6)  What are your areas of weakness that you need to focus on for improvement as we head into phase III?

Project management job opening

1tabsHi,

You should take a second and peak at this job that is posted. It is for a Senior PM position in California, so I’m not thinking you’ll be applying for this one but I’d like you to see how the job duty is described, pay, etc..PM Job Opening.

See this Designer (design management which is similar to project management) Position, and note which skills are needed for this position. Also note, they mention the use of the Studio IT or similar program. We have Design Manager 6 on our school computers for you to learn how to use which is a similar program to Studio IT.

FYI, the www.interiordesignjobs.com website is excellent for finding great positions.

Job Opportunity

Hello 4300,

See the below job posting article about company hiring.  This type of opportunity is PERFECT for where you are in your career journey.  These are type of opportunities that lead to full-time when you are done with school, or give you an extra shot of experience when/if you move and look for work elsewhere.  I’d be happy to talk with you if you are interesting in applying.

Window, Door, Millwork Distributors

After speaking with you this week and hearing most of you were looking at Pella for windows. I thought I’d mention there are some other good window/door companies to look at for your project with varying price ranges:

Andersen

Milgard

Certainteed

Jeld-Wen

Viking

For trim options: Trim is called millwork & mouldings in the industry.  Casing  (for windows) or baseboard and this type of finish is considered “Millwork” (millwork is trim, decorative trims).  Usually, it is challenging to find prices online for millwork because the prices vary per community and store.  We  maybe could try Athens building Supply for product, but I haven’t personally bought millwork in this community so I’m not sure we can get it in Athens or need to go to a Millwork distributor in Atlanta.    For pricing for your casing or baseboard you might need to run into your local Home Depot or Lowe’s and get pricing on theri millwork products that interest you.  I encourage you to do this because it will help you picture in real life your options for millwork.

Wk 6: Energy Vampire

Response due at the beginning of class on 9/24.

"Buy this attitude - Save Energy" Photo by Orocain

Take a glance at this  media article regarding the fact and fictions of energy consumption. The author,Lori Bongiorno, does a good job breaking down “Energy Vampires: Fact versus Fiction.” I found the information really helpful because I often hear things about what I should be doing, but I don’t really know why I should be doing it, or what is the real benefit, if any. Articles like this make it easier for me to tackle the fact vs. fiction aspect of energy consumption issues.

After reading the article, ponder and share your thoughts with us regarding the following questions:

1. What types of standby power productsfrom the list made by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) did you see that when compared in the ON/OFF status made you want to consider turning them off when not in use?

2. Watch the “Lose your excuse” Commercial running on TV right made by the Department of Energy – Share your thoughts on the commercial (see section energy EXTRAS, then see VIDEOS, the video with April cracks me up). What are your thoughts about these types of PSA (public service announcements)?

4.  Please visit Georgia Power’s page for Home Saving Tips.  Take the “Virtual House Tour” for as many rooms as you like, but definitely for the HOME OFFICE.  Seeing this 3-D rendering and tour of a home office and ways to make it more energy efficient may stimulate ideas for you to show sustainability in your home office perspective for board 3.  What information on the GP website did you read and learn from?

3.  Do you think it is important for you to be  knowledgable on energy consumption issues and solutions when you enter into your future career?

Paint Calculator

1paintUsing online Interior Paint Calculators is a quick and easy way to begin putting budget numbers to your paint needs.  It is important to note that it is industry standard to think 1 gallon of paint will cover 300 square feet.  Once you, as the designer, get a rough estimate of how much paint you’ll need in gallons – you can then multiple # of gallons needed [times] the cost of the paint specified for your project.

New look to site

Hello,

I felt the need to change the look of the class website.  I never loved the last look and found this and felt it is a clean slate for a new year.  Hopefully, it will work well for our class needs of weekly posts and links to outside helpful websites.

Wk 5: Indoor Air Quality

Response due at the beginning of class on 9/17.

Sustainable design focuses on healthy indoor spaces. We’ve all heard terms such as “sick building syndrome” or “healthy homes” or “VOCs” or “Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)”, “asbestos,” “carbon monoxide,” “Formaldehyde” “Lead (lead paint)”, “radon,” “mold,” “dust mites” and more.   But what are these issues, and whose job is it to to make sure we have healthy indoor air quality?  Many people do not realize what contributes to IAQ. More, many people, including professionals in design, can not explain what is a VOC and how to prevent them.

This information is KEY information for you to understand in order to successfully implement sustainable principles in buildings and homes.  When working with LEED one of categories is Indoor Air Quality (EQ) and part of the EQ LEED credit is a prerequisite that the home be approved by Energy Star Qualified Homes.

This week please visit the US EPA Organic Gases: Indoor Air Quality – this is an invaluable resource for designers to access when needed research based IAQ information.  Please answer the following fun questions using your own words:

1. What is asbestos? What are asbestos health effects?

2.  What are biological pollutants?

3.  What is carbon monoxide (CO) ? How does LEED for Homes address CO issues (see multiple approaches in LEED-H EQ section)?

4. What is Formaldehyde and pressed wood products?

5. What are the issues with household cleaning, maintenance and personal care? How do we as residential designers address this issue of cleaning, maintenance and care?

6. What is radon?

7. What is the issue with stoves, fireplaces, and chimneys?

8.  What is the issue with pesticides?

9.   Using your own words, explain VOC’s in general and how they will relate to your design practice.
